Put it in writing

“An unwritten want is a wish, a dream, a never-happen. The day you put your goal in writing is the day it becomes a commitment that will change your life. Are you ready?”

Tom Hopkins

What is your goal? To have a short story published in a magazine? Write and maintain your own blog with special guest appearances? Maybe you feel passionately on a topic or two and would love to see your collection of essays in an anthology. Or, you’ve worked diligently on your NaNo novel and want it on bookshelves and in the hands of strangers.

I did a fun exercise with my young writing students in my Publish Me! class. We imagined what our writing life would look like in the future…and wrote it down as if it had already happened.

We wrote short bios. Here are some examples:

Taiya M. from Chicagoland, IL has completed a collection of award-winning poetry. She took first place in several competitions and now is working on a collection of short stories.

David C. is the new king of horror. His stories have kept readers up at night. Read his latest novel, The Dollhouse, if you dare!

Grace H. is  a writer and illustrator. She published her first fantasy novel and is working on a comic strip.

I then instructed my students to post these bios in their work area, to remind them daily: Write! Submit! Never give up!

What would your bio say? Write it down. Make it happen.
